How to Prepare for Your Child’s Photo Session
Kids are dynamic, fun, and delightfully unpredictable! Because a child's mood plays a huge role in how a session goes,
a little preparation goes a long way toward capturing those gorgeous, genuine smiles.
Here is everything you need to know to ensure a smooth, fun, and successful photo shoot!
1. Timing is Everything ⏰
Plan Around Naps: Schedule your session during your child’s peak "happy hours." Avoid booking right before or during their usual nap times or bedtime.
Keep It Relaxed: Try to keep the routine calm and unhurried on the day of the shoot so your child feels relaxed arriving at the studio or location.
2. Communication & Special Accommodations 💙
Every child is unique. If your child requires special accommodations or has unique needs, please let me know in advance! I have plenty of experience and patience working with children who need extra care or tailored environments. Open communication helps me create the safest and most comfortable setting for your little one.
3. Appoint ONE "Designated Cheerleader" 🙋♀️
Children can easily become overwhelmed or frustrated when multiple adults are shouting their name or making noises behind the camera at the same time.
Bring Their Favorite Person: Whether it's a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or parent, choose one person your child adores to be the helper.
Stand Close to the Photographer: Your appointed helper will stand right behind or slightly above me. That way, when your child looks at their favorite person, their eye contact is directed right into the camera lens for those natural, candid smiles!
4. Pack Snacks, Drinks & Entertainment 🧸
Clean Snacks Only: Bring plenty of non-messy snacks and clear drinks. Avoid anything with bright dyes, chocolate, or stickiness that can stain teeth, lips, or skin (like red juice, fruit snacks, or chocolate chips).
Favorite Toys: Bring a couple of favorite toys, music, or small props that comfort them or light up their face.
5. Birthday Cakes & Milestone Extras 🎂
Cake Exclusions: Please note that cakes are not provided or included in the session fee. However, if you are celebrating a milestone or want a cake smash element, you are more than welcome to bring one!
Budget-Friendly Tip: You don't need to spend a fortune on a bakery cake. Walmart often has adorable custom cakes for under $25 that look great on camera!
A Gentle Note on Moods & Expectations
Children have strong emotions, and sometimes they simply have an off day. While I do everything possible to keep the atmosphere fun, playful, and patient, a child’s mood or behavior during the session is out of the photographer's control and directly impacts the final images. Trusting the process, keeping things low-pressure, and having fun together is the best way to get great results!
