How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session
Welcoming a new baby into the world is such a special time, and I am so honored to capture these priceless early memories for your family! To ensure our session goes as smoothly and comfortably as possible, here is a quick guide on how to prepare for your photoshoot.
Timing & Wardrobe
The Ideal Age: Newborn sessions are best held within the first two weeks of life (ideally between days 5 and 14). During this time, babies are sleepier and naturally curl up into those sweet, classic newborn poses.
Studio Wardrobe & Outfits: I offer a small, curated selection of adorable newborn outfits and wraps available for your use! Because the selection is limited, please let me know your size/fit expectations or if you plan to bring any personal heirloom outfits.
Pick Your Color Palette: To help me design and style your session set ahead of time, please send over 1 or 2 favorite color palettes you’d like me to focus on for wraps, backdrops, and props!
A Note on Siblings & Safety
If you have young toddlers or small children who will be joining the session, photos of them with their new baby brother or sister are absolutely precious—but safety is always my top priority.
Safety First: Very young children don't always have the motor control or patience to hold a delicate newborn safely on their own.
Adapting the Poses: If a specific pose on your wishlist (like a young sibling holding the baby unassisted) isn't safe or comfortable for either child, I will not risk it. Instead, I will clearly communicate with you and try safer alternative setups—such as having baby lie on a cozy rug while sibling sits right beside them, or having a parent spot them nearby.
Going with the Flow: Just like with newborns, toddlers run on their own schedule! Keeping the atmosphere relaxed and prioritizing everyone's safety will always give us the sweet, natural moments you'll cherish most.
Pre-Session Care & Packing List
Feeds & Rest: A well-rested, full baby is a happy, sleepy baby! Please ensure your baby is well-rested and plan to feed them right before the session begins
(or right when you arrive) so they drop into a deep, comfortable sleep.
What to Pack (Just in Case!):
Plenty of extra diapers and wipes.
2 to 3 backup outfits for baby (and an extra shirt for parents) in case of any unexpected messes or soiling.
Extra milk/formula and a pacifier (even if they don’t usually take one, it helps soothe them between poses!).
Parent & Family Options
Your Choice: You have full flexibility! We can focus exclusively on portraits of your baby, or we can include parent/family shots with your newborn. Just let me know your preference prior to the session so I can plan the timeline accordingly.
A Quick Note on Baby's Mood
Please remember that your newborn is running the show! Their mood, comfort, and rhythm dictate the pace of the photoshoot. If baby needs extra time for soothing, feeding, or snuggles, we will stop and take all the breaks necessary. Staying relaxed and going with the flow always yields the sweetest, most natural photos!
If you have any questions before your session or need inspiration for your color palette, feel free to reach out! I can't wait to work with you and your sweet little one.
